Orbán: Government initiates child protection referendum – UPDATED
The government has decided to initiate a referendum concerning issues around child protection, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Wednesday.
In a video posted on Facebook, Orbán said that “Brussels has clearly attacked Hungary” over the country’s recent child protection law.
“Our children’s future is at stake and we cannot make concessions in this case,” Orban said, and insisted that “when pressure on our country is this strong, Hungary could only be protected by the common will of the people”.
The questions for the planned referendum are as follows:
Do you support that minors should attend school classes on the topic of sexual orientations without parental consent?
Do you support promoting gender change treatments among minors?
Do you support that gender reassignment surgery should be available to minors?
Do you support that media content influencing sexual development should be presented to minors without restriction?
Do you support that media content depicting gender change should be presented to minors?
The prime minister called on voters to say no to all those questions and “stop Brussels” just like in 2016, when “Brussels wanted to force migrants onto Hungary”.
UPDATE
The referendum bid was submitted to the National Election Committee later on Wednesday, which will now have 60 days to assess the questions. The committee will approve the bid if the subject comes under the purview of parliament, if the questions do not touch on fields such as the budget or international treaties, and if they are worded clearly enough for the purpose.
The committee’s decision can be appealed within 15 days after release.

Why do the questions have to say without parental consent or without restriction. They’re all designed to give the answers the government wants. I’ve just seen this article on euronews, I didn’t read it as I was somewhat distracted by the size the PM has got to. It would seem the media here are restricted to showing which photos depict the PM in a more flattering way.
Our dear friend “Anonymous” obviously has NO children otherwise she / he / it (“shit” for short) would NOT be asking such totally STUPID questions at the start of her / his / its latest comment.
If – as suspected – the majority of Hungarians who DO have children support those questions for the planned referendum, then what are Brussels / the European Commission + Parliament going to say / do ?
Just imagine the UPROAR that will occur if those degenerate institutions totally ignore what Hungarians
– for the record – state and (in effect) dictate to the citizens of Hungary what is ‘best for them’ in relation to these highly contentious issues.
Hungary will have to change its flag to include a middle finger next to the state ‘coat of arms’ !
May I suggest that in the same referendum there will be 2 more questions:
1. Do you think the Hungarian Tax payer should build a campus for Fudan University?
2. Do you think the government should support foreign (Chinese) Universities instead of Hungarian Universities?
To the first anonymous, I saw the picture of the prime minister too. I think it is called ‘clinically obese’. Not good when he was trying to say about everyone having a more healthy lifestyle.
The 5XL dear leader of Orbanistan is playing one of his typical tricks, diverting attention from a number of scandals, this time especially from the Sinopharm one. He is very good at that, and he certainly does not lack the primitive audience required.
See Alfred’s on top form again. Think it must just copy and paste its comments as they’re always the same ?
It never ceases to amazing me that you can barely string two words together, know so little about the world, and yet have such strong political opinions. People like you really have enabled tyrants since time immemorial—while people like me have looked on in bewilderment and horror.
Hungarian people have already voted, they elected a CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT FIDESZ GOVERNMENT WITH MR. ORBAN AS PRIME MINISTER. All governments’ first duty is to protect its citizens, especially children. The EU is in its dictator fit, decided that a law enacted in Hungary protecting children is unacceptable to them.
Here are some examples why such law is necessary: Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus Hides ‘We’ll Convert Your Children’ Video. An article in a German Daily appeared with headline “Berlin authorities placed children with pedophiles for 30 years”. The ‘Kentler Project’ in West Berlin routinely placed homeless children with pedophile men, assuming they’d make ideal foster parents. A study has found the practice went on for decades.
Children’s brains is not developed until early 20s therefore children should not be making life altering decision at 18 years of age or under. An British study showed that life altering decisions made in the early years often ended up in suicide. It is also the parent’s right and duty to teach children about sexual information.
Russia just revealed a supersonic rocket which can be armed with nuclear material, Is the EU positively sure that it is a good idea to force Hungary to exit the EU and have closer relations with Russia and China? Presently, the EU politicians are very short sited.
Mr. Orban is an excellent economist, it is time for him to prepare a plan for Hungary’s exit from the EU. Sovereignty of the country should never be surrendered to ideologue dictators. Western EU was never Hungary’s ally. The EU is still acting more like and enemy than an ally.
Maria, you see to even take obvious satire at face value. That’s not good, it’s important to be able to tell when someone is joking or being serious. Don’t forget what Mr Abraham Lincoln once said: don’t believe everything you read on the internet.
